Avoid These Sunflower Feeder Mistakes

Sunflower feeders are wonderful for attracting a wide variety of birds to your backyard. These tube bird feeders are often inexpensive and they are designed to be easy to fill and to maintain. However, there are often stories of problems. If you do not choose the right sunflower feeder and use it in the right manner, you may injury or kill individual birds, sometimes in large numbers depending on the problem.

The items below detail several ways birds can be wounded or impaired while using a sunflower or other bird feeder.

1.    Avoid selecting a type of sunflower feeder with smaller holes and then putting seed that is too large in it. Always select the appropriate seed for the type of feeder. Animals can hurt their beaks or claws by trying to force the seed out, especially in areas where food is scarce.

2.Be sure to wash bird feeders regularly. In short, disease can lead to bird death stemming from a bird feeder that has microorganisms within it. It is very possible to kill a large number of individual birds in this way.

3.Refrain from distributing non-nutritious bird food or other food like products. Determine what type of bird frequents your feeders and provide food that is safe for them to consume. Even purchasing a seed mixture that contains a mixture of seeds can be dangerous to some birds.

4.    The location of the bird feeder is also important. One way that this can cause a problem for birds occurs when the feeders are placed too close to the home. Birds will then be tempted to fly into windows, which cause them to break a wing, beak or even their neck.

5.    If the bird feeder is too low to the ground, this may lead to some birds becoming victims to pets or other predators that are located nearby.

6.Familiarize yourself with local birds. Certain birds are considered pests or nuisances, be sure to discourange them from visiting your garden feeder. Further, sunflower bird feeders will cause squirrels or other pests to enter your yard. Choose only those foods that birds will feed on and use a feeder that discourages pests.

7.    Do not place bird feeders near to plants and gardens that you do not want them in. For example, locating a bird feeder in your vegetable garden may look beauitful, but birds are apt to damage plants.

If it sounds like too much trouble, do not worry. Just select the right bird feeder and place them in the correct locations. Then, simply opt for a bird food suitable for the birds in your area.
